Step 1: Define the use case

Requirements differ wildly by workload — find yours first:

  • Tinkering / scripts / bots: specs don’t matter, stability does → cheap yearly plans
  • Personal blog / light hosting: bandwidth and disk consistency → mid-tier yearly or EU monthly
  • China-facing usage: routes trump everything → CN2 GIA / 9929 / China-optimized
  • Production: snapshots, SLA, dedicated CPU → higher monthly tiers (e.g. V.PS EPYC line)

Step 2: Match budget to tier

BudgetRepresentative plansBest for

$36-50/yrRackNerd Specials 2GB ($35.99), BandwagonHost 20G PROMO ($49.99)Light hosting
$368+/yrBandwagonHost E-Commerce GIA tiersChina-optimized needs
€7-20/moV.PS Starter/Pro/PremiumExperience-first, production

Step 3: Understand routes (for China-facing use)

The same provider can serve completely different routes per datacenter. The vocabulary that matters:

  1. 163 backbone: commodity transit, congested at peak — the budget default
  2. CN2 GT: Telecom-optimized forward path, decent by day
  3. CN2 GIA: premium end-to-end network, the best China experience, the highest price
  4. 9929 / CMI: Unicom/Mobile optimized lanes — alternatives outside Telecom

Always ping/mtr the provider’s published test IPs yourself — that beats any review.

Step 4: Payment and account safety

  • Alipay: supported by BandwagonHost, V.PS and RackNerd
  • International cards: required by some providers (check their payment page)
  • Use real identity info: some providers manually review signups, and fake info = ban without refund

Pitfall checklist

  1. “Lifetime” VPS: there is no lifetime, only providers that disappear
  2. Ultra-cheap “unmetered” plans: there is always a hidden throttle
  3. Specs over routes: for China access, 80% of the experience is the route
  4. Buying 3+ years upfront: validate monthly/yearly for six months first
  5. No backups: every VPS dies eventually — snapshot your data yourself

Wrap-up

VPS is a you-get-what-you-pay-for business; absurdly cheap means costs were cut where you can’t see. Pick tier by use case, datacenter by route, provider by reputation — and you’ll avoid the big mistakes.
